"We didn’t cross the border. The border crossed us. We’ve always been here."
Publishing a 4,000 word essay to Twitter seems an odd endeavour at first, the 140 character constraint being part of the platform’s very fabric. However, Teju Cole’s A Piece of the Wall quickly dispelled any doubts I may have had. The stream of tweets slide from speech to narrative to quote and back, driving Cole’s non-fiction reportage from the American/Mexican border along at a sharp, steady pace.
The debate surrounding global immigration truly intrigues me – ideas of physically drawn borders even more so.
For me, one tweet seemed to resonate more than others:
"Citizenship is an act of the imagination. I was born American, but I also had to learn to become American."@1 week ago
