Walls: Real & Virtual

"We didn’t cross the border. The border crossed us. We’ve always been here."

Publishing a 4,000 word essay straight to Twitter might seem an odd endeavour at first, with the 140 character constraint part of the platform’s very fabric. However Teju Cole’s A Piece of the Wall quickly dispelled any doubts I may have had – granted, his being the first attempt I had come across.

The stream of tweets slide from speech to narrative to quote and back, driving Cole’s non-fiction reportage from the American/Mexican border along at a sharp, steady pace.

Contention surrounding questions of immigration fill me with intrigue – ideas of physically drawn borders even more so. For me, one line seemed to resonate more than others:

Citizenship is an act of the imagination. I was born American, but I also had to learn to become American.

You can find the essay as a Twitter collection here.
Buzzfeed also asked Cole a few questions about the piece here.
